We need not remind you that our country loves SUVs. They are spacious, comfortable and the extra ground clearance always comes handy on Indian roads. Moreover, owning a big SUV is still a matter of pride in our country. And when it comes to luxury SUVs, who else is more popular than Land Rover. Land Rover had recently unveiled the fourth member of the Range Rover family, the Velar, on March 1, 2017. And now, the Velar has been listed on Land Rover India’s website, hinting at a launch in the near future. It will either make its way into the country by the end of this year or can make its debut at the 2018 Auto Expo.
Four variants of the Velar - Velar, Velar S, Velar SE and Velar HSE have been listed on the website. It is based on the same platform as the Jaguar F-Pace and slots in between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. The Velar has two diesel engine options, D180 and D300, and one petrol engine option, P250, on offer. While the D180 is a 2.0-litre diesel engine which produces 180PS and 430 Nm, the D300 is a 3.0-litre diesel engine which churns out 300PS and 700 Nm. The P250 petrol engine is a 2.0-litre unit that produces 250PS of power and 365 Nm of torque. All the engines are coupled to the same 8-speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels.
What's more exciting is that most of the features announced at the time of its unveil have also been listed on the Indian website. You can opt for features like heads-up display, two 10-inch touchscreens - one on the dashboard for infotainment and navigation and the other in the centre console -, individual sliding armrests, configurable mood lighting, handsfree boot release, an activity key that can be worn as a wristband and 20-way electrically adjustable seats with heating and cooling options. If you like to remain in the rear seats, the rear-seat entertainment package comes with two 8-inch screens. The Velar also offers a 23 speakers Meridian Signature Sound system which should be enough to keep you entertained.
The Velar has a drag coefficient of 0.32, making it the most aerodynamic Land Rover ever produced. This helps the Velar achieve a good fuel efficiency. It is based on the iQ-AI platform which comprises of about 81 per cent aluminium that helps to keep the weight in check. You can expect the Velar to cost around Rs 80 lakh and it will compete with the likes of the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90.
