The French company entered the Indian car market in 2005, but only established its independent presence in 2011
Renault has clocked a milestone of 9 lakh cumulative unit sales in India as one of the best-selling European car brands in the country. It has been a long journey for the brand with various highs and lows.
The French marquee started its Indian presence from 2005 in partnership with Mahindra and their first co-developed model was the Logan sedan. That collaboration ended in 2010 as Renault had plans to start launching new products under its own brand name from mid 2011. Renault then made large investments for the establishment of its manufacturing facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in alliance with Nissan. Finally in 2011, the company launched its first cars in India under its own brand, the Fluence and Koleos.
However, these were premium and pricey offerings where volumes were low. The French company’s sales were boosted dramatically with the launch of its first compact SUV, the Duster, in 2012. While also a global model, it was rugged and affordable with a likeable set of powertrains. It was one of the original models that established the immensely popular compact SUV segment in India and stayed in the market till 2022.
Renault’s current product portfolio comprises three vehicles, one subcompact SUV, an entry level hatchback and an entry level MPV – Kiger, Kwid and Triber. The Kwid, which was launched in 2015, has played a major role in expanding Renault's sales network in India. The Triber made its market debut in 2019 as a 7-seater MPV, and at that time, it was one of the most affordable 3-row vehicles in India.

In 2021, Renault launched its subcompact offering, the Kiger, in India. It is one of the most affordable offerings in the sub-4m SUV segment while also offering some premium comforts and a 4-star safety rating as per the old GNCAP crash tests.
These India-centric compact and subcompact models have been the main reason behind Renault India achieving this sales milestone since it began independent operations in the country.

Commenting on the achievement, Venkatram Mamillapalle, Country CEO & Managing Director, Renault India Operations, said, “We are extremely thrilled to have crossed the 9-lakh sales milestone in India. This incredible journey has been made possible by the unwavering support and belief in the brand from our esteemed customers, dedicated dealer partners, valued suppliers, and our exceptional team of employees, and engineering professionals. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed to this remarkable achievement. Over the last few years, we have established a strong foundation in India. Company’s commitment to the Indian Government's 'Make in India' vision is unwavering and Renault aims to attain 90 percent localization for its upcoming products.”
In February 2023, Renault laid out its future roadmap in India with its alliance partner Nissan. Together, both carmakers have plans to launch six new models in the country, including four SUVs and two EVs. At present, Renault has over 450 sales points and 530 service points in India.
