In the past one year, we saw car manufacturers aiming the compact sedan segment, populated by the Honda Amaze, Maruti Swift Dzire and the Tata Indigo eCS. Hyundai is working on a compact sedan based on the upcoming Grand i10, and now reports are coming that Renault-Nissan alliance could launch a sedan based on the Pulse and Micra hatchbacks.
Nissan India that recently revived the Datsun brand after 32 years, is aiming to compete against the likes of Swift Dzire and Honda Amaze that currently rule the compact sedan segment of the Indian car market. According to the Telegraph, the sedan's versions of the Renault Pulse and Nissan Micra are still in the works, however no specific designs have been confirmed or finalise by the top executives.
Speaking to the Telegraph, a senior engineer with the company said, “We are in talks to come up with Micra and Pulse sedans but the plans are still undecided. It might take us two years to come up with the cars but if the company wants, it can be done earlier as well. It depends on the urgency of the alliance to break into the entry-level sedan segment".
We have seen carmakers achievin huge success in the Indian car markets on the back of the compact sedans. The Japanese automaker, Honda too witnessed an incredible growth ever since Amaze was launched in the Indian market. Renault-Nissan alliance also thought that a competitively priced sedan with stylish and sporty appearance can woo young car buyers.
Meanwhile, the alliance has recently announced that the Terrano SUV (based on the highly popular Renault Duster) would be the last cross-badged product to be launched in India. So, it is going to be very dramatic/interesting to see whether the alliance could alter their plans to bring in a compact sedan, or only single maker will launch the compact sedan based on Renault's Pulse/Nissan's Micra.
There are also reports that Datsun will also launch a compact sedan based on Go hatchback, so it is understandable that Renault will be the one to launch a compact sedan based on Pulse/Micra.
