How efficient is this full-size family sedan in real-world conditions? We find out
The Skoda lineup went petrol-only for the BS6 era which means its top-of-the-line offering, the Superb, had to ditch the 2.0-litre diesel engine. Its 1.8-litre TSI turbo-petrol unit is also replaced by a new 2.0-litre TSI engine. We’ve recently had the chance to put the new Skoda Superb through its paces in our real-world tests to see how efficient it is. Before we look at the results, here’s a quick look at the numbers:
Engine |
2.0-litre turbo-petrol |
Power |
190PS |
Torque |
320Nm |
Transmission |
7-speed DSG |
Kerb Weight |
1562kg/1579kg |
Claimed FE |
15.10kmpl |
Tested FE (City) |
11.28kmpl |
Tested FE (Highway) |
16.52kmpl |
The Superb we had was the top-spec and slightly heavier Laurin & Klement variant. As a premium sedan offering plenty of comforts, the Superb is a hefty car and that does play into the mileage figures. Understandably, the premium family sedan is nearly 4kmpl under the claimed fuel efficiency of 15.10kmpl in city driving conditions. However, the powertrain is able to boost the Superb’s mileage by over 5kmpl to achieve more than 16kmpl in highway driving conditions thanks to the 7-speed gearbox.
That highway mileage is especially impressive considering the claimed fuel efficiency tests are carried out in a highly controlled manner, and recreating those conditions in the real world is next to impossible.

Let’s take a look at how the 2020 Superb could perform in mixed driving conditions:
City:Highway (50:50) |
City:Highway (75:25) |
City:Highway (25:75) |
13.31kmpl |
12.21kmpl |
14.63kmpl |
Using the figures from our fuel-efficiency tests, we calculate that the new Superb can deliver anywhere between 12kmpl and 15kmpl depending on where you use it. In every scenario, the Superb falls short of its claimed figure of 15.10kmpl. If driving predominantly in the city, we estimate that the Skoda sedan will return a little over 12kmpl and if you’re doing mostly highway miles, you can expect well over 14kmpl. In the case of equal amounts of city and highway driving, Superb can deliver a mileage of over 13kmpl. These numbers are not set in stone of course. While testing, we try and stick to driving how most people would in the real world but if you’re a bit heavy with your foot on the accelerator, the figures will dip below the stated numbers.
