Till now you must have seen the smart talking cars in some fantasy movies only but now the scientists are actually working on cars which may themselves call up the emergency services when a crash takes place. If things work out well, such cars will soon be a reality. Such cars will not only be able to ring up the emergency services but will also let the emergency services know about the severity of a crash. All this will be possible through the sensors that will be embedded in such cars. More such predictions about the cars emerged at a recent conference where the possible benefits of smart processors in the cars were being discussed. Steve Wainwright, European manager, Freescale Semiconductor  was quoted saying that the car is possibly going to be the most compute-intensive possession of the future.

As per Steve Wainwright, the average cars already possess 25- 30 electronic control units onboard and high-end cars possibly contain up to 80 such units. These units act as small computers and take charge of car systems including stability control, safety, power distribution etc. These small control units are also contributing in the augmentation of the driving skills of people. More such systems are on their way of development. Wainwright also said that everyone who is into driving is feeling better then what he used to feel ten years ago, in terms of his or her driving skills. At the Future World Sympoisum organised by National Microelectronics Institute, UK, Paul Burnley, an analyst from SBD – an automotive market research firm commented that in the future, cars will be among the first to respond after a crash. He further said that much developed and advanced systems will be able to send data with the help of distributed sensors in the car to the emergency services.

These smart cars will also inform about their location and the number of people involved in a crash to get the quick support of emergency services. As the world is now moving from petrol-driven cars to electric and hybrid cars, the smart in-car systems would be an inseparable part of future vehicles, added Wainwright. He also opined that the combination of cars and smart processors will result in a safer and greener driving.
