Weeks after the official launch of its petrol version, the Volkswagen Ameo’s diesel trim has been caught testing in Maharashtra. We reported earlier that a diesel version of the Ameo would be introduced in August and with this sighting, the chances of the same have really gone up. The spotted vehicle had a TDI badge at its rear.
Volkswagen has been tweaking the 1.5-litre diesel mill for its entire range, including the Ameo, the Polo and the Vento. With the sighting of the Ameo diesel, it seems the diesel engine is now being tested in real world conditions after its rigorous tests in VW labs. This motor is expected to develop slightly more power compared to its predecessor. It would be churning out maximum power of 90PS and peak torque of 230Nm. It is likely to be mated to a five-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed automatic DSG gearbox.
At the time of its launch the German carmaker avoided introducing the Ameo in a diesel variant, with the emission scandal doing the rounds. The automaker had to recall 1.9 lakh vehicles over the diesel emission issue in the past.
The first made-for-India product from Volkswagen, the Ameo carries many first in class features such as cruise control, Apple CarPlay, cornering lights, rain sensing wipers and anti-pinch windows both at the front and the rear. On top these features, the compact sedan is priced almost identical to the segment best-seller, the Maruti Swift DZire. The prices even undercut its hatchback sibling, the Polo.
The Ameo diesel is likely to start around Rs 6.5 lakh with the automatic’s price falling in the vicinity of Rs 9.5 lakh.
