With the Altroz slated for a January 2020 launch, here’s a quick look at the specifications of Tata’s first-ever premium hatchback and how it stacks up against its rivals

The premium hatchback segment is led by the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai Elite i20. Now Tata is all set to take the total up as it will be launching its first-ever premium hatchback, the Altroz, in January 2020. It was unveiled on December 3 and pre-launch bookings are now underway. But how does it fare against its rivals? Let’s take a look:

Dimensions:

Longest: Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza

Widest: Tata Altroz

Tallest: Honda Jazz

Longest Wheelbase: Hyundai Elite i20

The Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza is the longest car in the segment. However, when it comes to the width, the Tata Altroz is the widest premium hatchback. But the Hyundai Elite i20 takes the cake when the wheelbase of all the premium hatchbacks is considered. Honda’s premium hatchback is the tallest of all the offerings. The Volkswagen Polo is the smallest car here in all dimensions.

Engines

Petrol:

All the models are offered with a 1.2-litre petrol unit except for the Volkswagen Polo 1.0-litre.

Most Powerful: Volkswagen Polo GT TSI

Torquiest: Volkswagen Polo GT TSI

When the power figures of all the premium hatchbacks are considered, the Polo with its 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine turns out to be the most powerful and the torquiest offering of the segment. All the models are available with a 5-speed manual gearbox with the option of a CVT. However,  the Polo GT TSI comes with the more advanced 7-speed DSG (dual-speed gearbox) transmission option. The Altroz is also expected to get a dual-clutch transmission and a turbocharged petrol engine, but not at the time of launch. While the Altroz, Baleno and the Glanza are available with BS6-compliant units, those on the Elite i20, Polo and the Jazz are yet to be upgraded.

Diesel:

Except for the Glanza, all other hatchbacks are offered with diesel engines along with their petrol counterparts.

Most Powerful: Volkswagen Polo GT TDI

Torquiest: Volkswagen Polo GT TDI

The Volkswagen Polo GT TDI’s diesel unit is the most powerful and the torquiest of all the engines on offer. As of now, only the Altroz’s 1.5-litre diesel engine is BS6-compliant. In case the transmission options are considered, the Jazz is the only premium hatchback that is offered with a 6-speed manual option whereas all others come with a 5-speed gearbox. However, none of these models offer an automatic transmission option in their diesel avatar.
