The Tata Kite 5 (now called the Tata Tigor) has been spied while testing near Pune. The test mule was covered with heavy camouflage, revealing next to nothing.
The Tata Kite 5 is a sub 4 metre compact sedan based on Tata's yet-to-be-launched hatchback, the Tiago. The sedan looks identical to its hatchback sibling, barring the added boot, of course. The interiors are expected to be a copy-paste from the Tiago hatchback as well. Tata is likely to incorporate safety features such as ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic BrakeForce Distribution) and Corner Stability Control into the sedan.
The Kite 5 will be available with a diesel as well as a petrol mill. In all probability, Tata will carry forward the engine from the Tiago. The diesel powerhouse is a 1.05-litre, three-cylinder unit churning out 69bhp of power and 140Nm of torque. The petrol motor, on the other hand, is a 1.2-litre mill, producing 84 horses of power and 114Nm of torque.
Expected to be launched in the second half of 2016, the Kite 5 is likely to be priced below the Zest. Just like the Tiago is a successor to the Tata Indica eV2, the Kite 5 will step into the shoes of India’s first compact sedan, the Tata Indigo eCS. Tata has received a lukewarm response for the Zest and will be banking on the Kite 5 to take care of the volumes.
