The only entry-level electric hatchback in India, the affordability of the Tiago EV has surely accelerated EV adoption in the country
The biggest player in India’s EV market is undoubtedly Tata and its most recent all-new electric offering is the Tata Tiago EV. Its prices were announced a year ago from today and it has since become quite a popular offering, even being considered by first time car buyers. It is the only entry-level electric hatchback in the country still, and here’s a quick recap of everything that happened in the past 12 months.
Delayed Delivery
Even though Tata revealed the introductory prices for the Tiago EV by September-end, customer deliveries only began in December as per schedule. Even bookings were opened two weeks after the launch, and 10,000 people put down a deposit within 24 hours. However, it was only by early May 2023 that Tata was able to deliver 10,000 units of the electric hatchback.
Since most bookings were for the bigger battery variants, Tata prioritised the deliveries of those orders. At present, the average wait time for a Tiago EV stands at around 2 months which is fairly reasonable.
Moderate Price Jump
The Tata Tiago EV arrived at an introductory starting price of just Rs 8.49 lakh, but since then prices have been revised across the variants. The first price hike came in early February 2023 which raised prices uniformly by Rs 20,000. Here’s the detailed comparison of prices from launch to the year after:

Rs 11.54 lakh/ Rs 12.04 lakh (7.2kW) |

The Tata Tiago EV prices have only gone up by up to Rs 25,000 since launch, while the MR variants with the smaller battery pack have attracted a lower premium of Rs 20,000.

Special Edition Teased
At the Tata stalls for the 2023 Auto Expo, we got to see a sportier looking version of the electric hatchback called the Tiago EV Blitz. It featured visual changes like body skirts and bumper extensions along with blacked out elements for the grille, wheels, roof and ORVMs. However, we saw no special changes to the interior with no reports for mechanical updates. Even as a purely cosmetic upgrade, we would like to see the Tata Tiago EV Blitz make it to showrooms in 2024.
The regular Tiago EV got some extra screentime during the summer as well as the official sponsor vehicle of the 2023 IPL (Indian Premier League) season.
Thoroughly Tested
Since its launch, we’ve had the chance to spend some time with the Tata Tiago EV to test out its real world range and performance, as well as compare it to its closest rival that arrived a few months after - the Citroen eC3. Check out each test we did and how it fared below:
