The Mahindra Thar’s Prices Have Gone Up By Rs 1.33 Lakh In Just 10 Months

The price hike is mostly consistent across petrol and diesel variants of the Thar

• Second-gen Thar launched in October 2020, priced from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh.

• Latest price hike puts Thar in the range of Rs 10.68 lakh to Rs 15.08 lakh.

• Mahindra had earlier discontinued entry-level AX Std and AX variants of Thar but their prices are still being listed with dealerships.

• Thar gets a choice of petrol and diesel engines, both with manual and automatic transmissions.

• Waiting period for Thar has stretched upto a year as Mahindra tries to meet demands despite disruptions caused by the pandemic.

• Customers who placed their orders from January 8, 2021, onwards will have to pay the hiked prices as applicable at the time of delivery.

The second-gen Mahindra Thar has been on sale since October 2020. Since then, the Thar has garnered enough popularity that its waiting period is stretching well into 2022 for many new buyers. The affordability of the three-door off-roading SUV has also been key to its mass appeal. However, the Thar has gotten notably pricier as part of Mahindra’s latest price hike. Let’s see just how much more expensive the Thar is today than the day it was launched:

Diesel

• The price hike across the petrol and diesel variants seems consistent. While most manual transmission options have gotten pricier by Rs 88,000, the automatic variants are now more expensive by Rs 1.33 lakh. Prices for the diesel-manual LX variant have gone up by Rs 63,000. These are significant price jumps across the board for the Thar.

• The carmaker has hiked prices across the range due to the surge in input costs. Mahindra claims to have held on to the original prices as long as possible.

• Mahindra had temporarily discontinued the entry-level AX Std and AX variants with the jump seats in the rear for the six-seater layout at the end of 2020. However, the latest price list suggests that these could become available again though nothing is official yet. 

• The AX Std and AX variants are the only ones to be offered with a fixed soft top while the other variants get the choice of a convertible soft top or a fixed hard top. 

• The Thar gets the choice of a 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, both with the option of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The exact powertrain options depend on the variant and rooftop selection.

• Since Mahindra is offering the Thar from the AX(O) variant onwards only, its current price ranges between Rs 12.78 lakh and Rs 15.08 lakh, which is closer to the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Skoda Kushaq.

• The most recent update on the waiting period for the Thar revealed that it can be as long as a year for some cities and upto 8 months for most others.

• Even orders made in the first quarter of this month are pending delivery and customers who booked a Thar after January 8, 2021, will have to pay the going rate at the time of delivery. As seen in the table above, most will have to pay nearly a lakh more for the Thar today than what it was priced at when they placed their order.

• There will be a five-door version of the Thar that is expected to be launched by 2023.

• Direct rivals like the Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny are likely to be launched soon with the Gurkha arriving before the end of 2021.
