These electric vehicles are taking different routes to make electric mobility more affordable than ever
While most big mass market brands are slated to introduce affordable EVs circa 2025, there are those looking to get a head start. As of now, the best that the consumer can expect from an entry-level EV is a base price below Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) and a claimed range of over 200km. Here are three models due to arrive in 2023 that will meet that criteria:
Tata Tiago EV
While Tata has already launched the all-electric version of the Tiago hatchback, customer deliveries are slated to begin at the start of 2023. It comes with the choice of two battery sizes: 19.2kWh and 24kWh; the former promising 250km of range and the latter 315km. The smaller battery variants of the Tiago EV are priced from Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s not well-equipped in terms of features and comes with a 61PS electric motor delivering 104Nm of torque, as well as a 3.3kW AC charger.

MG Air EV
MG only recently confirmed that the Air EV will be its entry-level EV offering in India. It had already been spied on our roads and a concept was showcased earlier, at the 2020 Auto Expo. The Air EV, in its Wuling-badged Indonesian specification, also offers customers the choice of choosing between two battery packs - a 17.3kWh unit offering a claimed range of 200km and a 26.7kWh option promising 300km. Its smaller battery variant with fewer features will likely be the one to be priced below Rs 10 lakh. The MG Air EV is expected to make its India debut at the Auto Expo in January 2023 and be introduced a few months later.

Citroen C3 EV
The only other confirmed entry-level EV to be put on sale here in 2023 is from Citroen. It is said to be based on the C3 hatchback whose prices start from Rs 5.88 lakh (ex-showroom) suggesting a base price below Rs 10 lakh for the all-electric version. The French carmaker’s C3 EV will debut in December with the launch scheduled for early 2023. It is expected to offer a range of around 300km with a minimalist set of features, such as a large central display.
