Toyota may use sugarcane-based material for car interior lining

Toyota Motor Corporation, the Japanese auto giant has stated that it will launch a new material for vehicle lining. This material will have 30 per cent of sugarcane in it. Such material will surely lessen the consumption of petroleum. This new material is called bio-polyethylene terephthalate or bio-PET. It is presently used in PET bottles. This time, it is planned that the material will be used as an interior fabric for car and that too for the very first time in the world, said Toyota. The use of this new green fabric will start with the luggage-compartment of the Lexus CT200h, the small luxury hybrid. The car is expected to be there in the market early in the coming year.

Toyota is also planning to introduce a new vehicle product in which eighty per cent of the interior will be made of the eco-friendly plant-based plastics. This will be an appreciable step from the company’s side. Such material will include the bio-PET next year. The use of such material will help in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and oil consumption. Also, bio-PET is comparatively resistant to wear and tear and also from heat, said the company. Until today, Toyota has used material which has been derived from corn for its floor mats, in some of its vehicles.

Toyota Motor Corporation is also ready to display two new versions of the Toyota Prius hybrid at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. This display will surely reflect the dominance which the automaker grabs in the electric and hybrid car market in the United States. The Detroit Auto show is all geared to begin in January 2011 and auto enthusiasts all over the world seem to be preparing themselves for the same. Don Esmond, Toyota Motor Sales USA senior vice president for automotive operations disclosed the showcase that will introduce Prius family’s next member at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. The model that will be exhibited would be an all new model with a much better styling, more comfort and also the greater versatility. However, the model would still maintain the heritage of the original Toyota Prius.
