Toyota and Suzuki will be sharing models in certain global markets as part of their ongoing partnership. Included in the shared list is the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza sub-compact SUV, which is expected to get a Toyota badge in its next-generation. However, a new model from Daihatsu, Toyota’s sub-brand, gives us a hint at what it might look like.

The Daihatsu Rocky sub-4m SUV was showcased at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota has its own compact SUV based on the Rocky, called the Raize, which is expected to break cover in November 2019. The first images for the Toyota Raize have leaked ahead of the unveil. While the Daihatsu’s front-end looks more like the current-gen Hyundai Creta, the Toyota Raize seems to have opted for a more sportier front end.
A Toyota sub-4m SUV is expected to launch in India in 2022 based on the second-gen Brezza. It will be manufactured at the carmaker’s Bengaluru plant. Unlike the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Toyota Glanza cross-badging where both premium hatchbacks look almost exactly alike, the shared sub-4m SUV is expected to offer distinguishable styling. This is where the Toyota Raize could give us a glimpse of the styling that could feature on the India-spec model as well.
In terms of powertrains, the Toyota-Suzuki Brezza is expected to be offered with a petrol engine only. The current-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza is available only with a 1.3-litre diesel engine as of now. However, the Brezza is expected to get a facelift and introduce a BS6 petrol engine variant by April 2020.
Mahindra and Hyundai are the most recent manufacturers to join the sub-4m SUV segment, with the XUV300 and Venue respectively. Kia has been spied testing a sub-compact SUV of its own lately. With an expected launch of 2022, Toyota would be quite a late entrant to the segment, despite the partnership with Suzuki to borrow the Vitara Brezza.
