Toyota Kirloskar Motor is studying the Indian auto market to launch new hybrid vehicles. The company plans to launch new hybrid cars in India in future, only after evaluating the market and the sales of its only hybrid model 'Prius' in India. We all know that hybrid or electric vehicles will be the future passenger cars to run on the Indian roads. Recently, Mahindra has launched its electric car e2o in India.
As part of the company's global strategy to develop fuel efficient and environment friendly vehicles, Toyota Motor Corporation will launch 18 new hybrid models by 2015. Toyota India may also manufacture hybrid cars in India if demand for such vehicles increases in future. Speaking to PTI, A TMC spokesperson said,"We have already introduced the Prius to Indian market and we will continue to study the Indian market to introduce new hybrid models in India at appropriate times".
The Japanese auto-major is aiming to launch 18 new hybrid models by 2015, of which 13 are new vehicles and five will be model changes. Depending on the future market dynamics, the company will decide to locally assemble the hybrid vehicles in two of its Indian plant. However, the company official denied to comment on the possible time span to start CKD (completely knocked down) operations of hybrid vehicles in India. Toyota Prius is the only hybrid car from the Japanese auto-giant in India, and comes as a completely built unit. The sales of this model has increased over 70% to 12 units in last fiscal as against 7 units in 2011-12. Due to high import duties, Prius is priced at Rs. 29.26 lakh and Rs. 31.43 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The firm sold over 50 lakh units of hybrid vehicles globally till March 31 this year.
