Toyota has unveiled it’s a new 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, the company’s second turbocharged entry in a series of new engines with drastically improved thermal and fuel efficiency. The new 8NR-FTS 1.2-liter direct-injection turbo engine combines Toyota's years of hybrid and conventional powertrain development, including breakthroughs in combustion and loss-reduction technologies. This has resulted in the engine delivering superior driving performance and acceleration, while also achieving impressive fuel efficiency and world-leading thermal efficiency.
The new 1.2-litre turbo charged engine puts put a maximum power of 116 bhp at 5200-5600 rpm and a maximum torque of 185 Nm at 1500-4000 rpm. To enable adaptive intake cooling without getting affected by the engine’s thermal load, a single-scroll turbocharger is paired with a cylinder head that uses an integrated water-cooled exhaust manifold to optimize exhaust temperature. This results in responsive acceleration and maximum torque across a wide rpm range.
Toyota has announced that it will launch the new engine with the facelifted Auris in Japan with a fuel economy of 19.4 kmpl.
