Update: There has been a lot of revamps and upgraded versions of popular car seen at the Auto Expo 2016, but the German automaker Volkswagen brought out a new model dubbed as Volkswagen Ameo. This new car would be entering the sub-4 metre compact sedan category, a segment which already has a lot of competitors in the form of Honda Amaze, Maruti Swift Dzire and Chevrolet Sail. Made for India, Volkswagen Ameo looks beautiful and will be available in two engine options including 1.2 litre diesel 3 cylinder MPI petrol and the TDI diesel with 1.5 litre capacity. As we reported yesterday, Volkswagen’s “Guess the name” campaign has culminated today. The upcoming compact sedan has officially donned the moniker “Ameo”, staying true to the market rumors. Speaking of the campaign, one can say that it was misleading at best and that's putting it politely. The video of the campaign subtly implied that the participant were addressing the car with its official moniker, but the lip movements are farthest from the pronunciation of Ameo. This might have been a marketing move aimed at cultivating mystique, but seems rather deceitful and not a smart thing to do at this point, considering the German Automaker’s current controversial position. So, do not fret if you were put off by the video and couldn't guess the name right.
Volkswagen Ameo will be showcased at the 13th edition of Indian Auto Expo, which will be held from 5th to 9th of February in the Greater Noida region. Ameo is derived from the latin word ‘Amo’, which translated into ‘I love’. Ameo is based on Volkswagen’s PQ24 platform which is shared with the Polo hatchback and Vento sedan. The overall styling of the car will also be shared with its sibling offerings.
As deduced from the spyshots, Ameo might incorporate a revised front bumper and a chunkier boot as compared to the Vento sedan, which will help it fall under the sub-4 meter compact sedan tax bracket. Speaking of the rear end, the taillight is substantially inspired by the Polo, whilst the overall design of the cluster distinguishes itself from the hatchback. The tailgate also features a fresh design, as reflected in the teaser image provided above.
It is also speculated that under the hood, Ameo will incorporate the same power options that are found in the Volkswagen Polo, which will help it compete against the likes of Ford Aspire, Maruti Dzire, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent. Besides the Volkswagen Ameo price is likely to begin somewhere around 5.5 lakhs.
