The looming threat of skyrocketing petrol prices and the stagnant Indian car market signalled the death of the VW Polo 1.6. Easily categorised as one of the hottest hatchbacks in the Indian market, the Polo petrol simply could not supply the sales figures that justified its continued existence. And thus it died out. However, a recent click by the motoring enthusiasts over at Overdrive shows a possible replacement for the Polo 1.6. The image shows a Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI with a GT badge and rear spoiler being tested on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.
While it may be too early to get all excited, this does show that Volkswagen may well be on their way to releasing this hatchback into the Indian market, hopefully sometime within this year. Getting to the engine specs on the Polo 1.2 TSI, we’ve got a 1.2-litre fuel injection turbo-charged engine that will hand out 104bhp along with 175Nm of peak torque. The company claimed mileage figure for the Polo 1.2 TSI is 18.9kmpl, which for a petrol engine is pretty exciting. That plus the fact that the Polo still has many ardent fans may well make it a market winner this time around. Keep your fingers crossed!
