Volkswagen's answer to the likes of Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster has finally come to India. The German carmaker has unveiled the Taigun compact SUV at the ongoing 2014 Delhi Motor Show. It was first unveiled as a concept model at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in 2012.
It is based on the Volkswagen's new small family platform structure (PQ12), which also underpins the new Up!. This compact SUV measures less than 4 metre in length, however with a wheelbase of 2.47 metre it offers a good cabin space to carry five adults comfortably.
The Taigun compact SUV is powered by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine. This engine will be paired to either six-speed manual or/and the DSG automatic transmission, which transmits power to front wheels of the SUV. The diesel model gets the 1.2-litre engine that churns out a maximum power output of 74bhp.
The Taigun SUV will be assembled at Volkswagen's manufacturing facility in Pune, India. It share most of its styling cues with its SUV siblings, the Tiguan and Touareg. The mini SUV sports rugged side panels, underbody protection and practical roof rails with LED spotlights
This small SUV will directly target the urban buyers. Its high driving position provides a good view of traffic to the driver. The Taigun also offers a decent boot space of 280-litres, which can be extended to 987-litres with the rear seats down. The interior of the SUV is simple and spacious, with controls pared back to a minimum. The Taigun SUV is expected to hit the Indian shores by 2015.
