The Volvo cars in India come through completely built unit (CBU) route . Volvo cars are likely to undergo technological and styling changes for the global market and probability is high that it may follow the suit for Indian car market as well. Volvo had recently unveiled a 2 liter D3 diesel engine that claims to be fuel-efficient, low on emission and that also includes engine start-stop technology, which is a downsized version of twin turbo 2.4 liter D5 diesel engine.

The humble D3 engine, a downsized version of the D5 engine, generates a peak power of 162 Bhp, a 40 Bhp cut-down with respect to power and a 20 Nm reduction in the peak torque generation to 400 Nm. The smaller D3 engine is considered to be more fuel efficient and priced lower due to its toned down version. The Volvo is likely to have this D3 engine installed in the Volvo S60 and Volvo S80 sedans as a hypermiller variants similar to that of the BMW 520 D and Mercedes Benz E250CDI. Volvo S60 offers a mileage of 19 km/l and Volvo S80 sedan also delivers a decent mileage of 18km/l.

The Volvo's start-stop technology works with a mechanism that involves applying high brake pressure to turn off the engine, which springs back into life with mere increase in pedal pressure and that works efficiently without any obstacles. However, whether the start-stop technology will be brought into the domestic markets as well by Volvo India, is still speculated, which is believed to come accompanied with the six-speed automatic gearbox. An electric pump works with pumping the oil into the transmission to enable a lubricated transmission and a smooth motion of the car. The engines of the Volvo cars that comes with the start-stop mechanism are massive units and are designed to meet the high number of starting cycles.
