Volvo India has reportedly imported a single unit of the new S90 in the country. The Swedish automaker’s flagship sedan will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, around the festive season. It made its world debut in December 2015 at the Detroit Motor Show with subsequent launches around the world starting this year.
When launched the S90 will compete with the likes of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, facelifted Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Jaguar XF. It will replace the ageing S80 in the country as it did around the world. The S90 was the second product in Volvo’s reinvention which started with the successful second generation XC90 globally. The S90 share Volvo's new design language, which also made its debut with the XC90 along with its features. Both the vehicles share the automaker’s new lightweight Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Speaking of the features, it will come with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and vertically placed Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, just like the XC90 and others.
Mechanically, in India the S90 will be powered by the new 2.0-litre Drive-E diesel engine which made its debut with the XC90. The engine in the SUV musters close to 228PS and a max torque of 470Nm, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Globally, like the XC90, the S90 is also offered with the T8 Twin Engine hybrid powertrain, which uses a turbo and supercharged petrol engine coupled to an electric motor (read more on the T8 Twin Engine powertrain). Besides this, there is a petrol variant as well internationally.
