When Is The Global Unveil Of 5-Door Mahindra Thar?

 The 5-door Mahindra Thar will be styled similarly to the 3-door version but with more features and practicality

Even though we got confirmation that there will not be any new Mahindra models entering the market in 2023, one highly anticipated unveil could take place this year: the 5-door Mahindra Thar. Several reports suggest it will be globally unveiled on Independence Day but our Mahindra sources have denied this to be true. 

Will We See The Thar 5-Door This Year?

It is widely known that Mahindra usually plans unveils and launches on national holidays like the Republic Day (XUV400 bookings open), Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti (3-door Thar launch). Even for this August 15, Mahindra has an event scheduled, but it’s highly unlikely to be of the Thar 5-Door as per our sources. 

Instead, the focus for that event will be on its new electric vehicle lineup, which will go on sale starting 2025. Amidst its expansive EV lineup, the Thar 5-door might not be a great fit and deserves its own dedicated event. We believe that the unveiling and launch of the elongated off-roader will be on the same day, in 2024.

So, What Will We See On August 15?

Mahindra is expected to shed some more light on its EV lineup. The list includes the all-electric XUV700 previously revealed as the XUV e8, a full-size EV (which is bigger than the XUV700), a compact SUV EV, and three dedicated EV-only models that will be called ‘Born EVs’. The XUV 700 EV will be the first one to go on sale and we might just see a near production-ready version of it. 

Latest Details Of The Thar 5-Door

The 5-door version of the Thar has been spied testing multiple times as it nears its production-ready avatar. The spy shots suggest that it will carry the same boxy old-school silhouette as the 3-door model, save for the stretched body and two more doors. It will get an electric sunroof and a full metal hard top, C-pillar mounted door handles, and a rear wiper. 

The interior is likely to be identical to the Thar save for some feature additions for added comfort and convenience. Powering the more practical version of the SUV will be the same 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, albeit in a higher state of tune. Manual and automatic 6-speed transmissions will still be on offer with both engines.

The 5-door Thar is expected to be priced from around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom), as a more premium and bigger alternative to the Maruti Jimny.
