Which are the most fuel efficient diesel cars in the sub-Rs 10 lakh space? We give you the answer.
Although fuel efficiency is no longer the main criteria for most car buyers in the country, it is still an important factor while picking a vehicle. The importance of fuel efficiency becomes even more relevant when shopping in the sub-Rs 10 lakh price bracket as buyers in this segment are not really keen about splurging on fuel. So, we have compiled a list of 5 diesel cars under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) that deliver the best fuel efficiency.
- RsPrice5.60 - 9.40 Lakh*
- Mileage (upto)27.3 kmplEngine (upto)1498 ccBHP98.6
Fuel Efficiency - 27.3kmpl
Engine - 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder
Transmission - 6-speed MT
Price - Rs 8.17 lakh to Rs 9.41 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The Jazz has been Honda’s only hatchback offering in India since the Brio was discontinued in 2019, and it competes in the premium hatchback space just inside the sub-Rs 10 lakh bracket. The 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Jazz is also utilised by other Honda vehicles, and in the Jazz it returns a fuel efficiency of over 27kmpl. Honda’s premium hatchback is quite spacious on the inside and packs all the major features that are present in the competition.
- RsPrice5.90 - 9.66 Lakh*
- Mileage (upto)27.39 kmplEngine (upto)1248 ccBHP100.0
Fuel Efficiency - 27.39kmpl
Engine - 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder
Transmission - 5-speed MT
Price - Rs 6.74 lakh to Rs 8.73 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The Baleno once again makes the list, this time due to its diesel engine. The 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced engine is only BS4 compliant but can still return an impressive fuel efficiency of 27.39kmpl. Unlike the Swift, it can only be had with a 5-speed manual transmission. However, the diesel Baleno’s days are numbered as Maruti has decided to withdraw from the diesel market once BS6 emission norms come into play.
- RsPrice5.41 - 11.11 Lakh*
- Mileage (upto)27.4 kmplEngine (upto)1498 ccBHP98.63
Fuel Efficiency - 27.4kmpl
Engine - 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder
Transmission - 5-speed MT, CVT
Price - Rs 7.05 lakh to Rs 9.06 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The Amaze has been around for quite some time in the Indian market and in its second-gen avatar, the subcompact sedan has been selling in good numbers. The Amaze once again uses the same 1.5-litre diesel that powers the Jazz and City. However, in the Amaze, the motor is more refined and returns better fuel efficiency. Honda offers the diesel Amaze with a 5-speed manual transmission or CVT, so you can choose whether you want a three-pedal or two-pedal configuration. However, with the CVT, the Amaze returns a claimed fuel efficiency of 23.8kmpl.
4. Maruti Ciaz
- RsPrice9.40 - 12.29 Lakh*
- Mileage (upto)20.65 kmplEngine (upto)1462 ccBHP103.25
Fuel Efficiency - 28.09kmpl
Engine - 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, mild-hybrid system
Transmission - 5-speed MT
Price - Rs 9.20 lakh to Rs 11.03 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The Ciaz is on the list due to the 1.3-litre diesel engine that Maruti sources from Fiat, which is also available in the Swift and Baleno. The reason that this engine is so frugal in the Ciaz is because it is paired with Suzuki’s Smart Hybrid system. Just like the Baleno, the days of this model are numbered. Once we are past the BS6 deadline, Maruti will pull the plug on this version of the Ciaz, as it will no longer comply with new emission norms. Unlike its petrol counterpart, the diesel Ciaz can only be had with a manual transmission. While the higher variant of the Ciaz might be over Rs 10 lakh, we’ve placed it on our list since the still picked it for lower variant is priced below Rs 10 lakh.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz comparison with similar cars
- RsPrice4.54 - 8.84 Lakh*
- Mileage (upto)28.4 kmplEngine (upto)1248 ccBHP83.14
Fuel Efficiency - 28.4kmpl
Engine - 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder
Transmission - 5-speed MT/AMT
Price - Rs 7.03 lakh to Rs 8.89 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The Swift utilises the same 1.3-litre diesel engine as the Ciaz, but it does not get the Smart Hybrid system that is present in the Maruti sedan. Instead, it returns a fuel efficiency of 28.4kmpl because it is considerably lighter than the Ciaz. Just like the other two Maruti’s on the list, the diesel Swift’s fate is sealed. It will no longer be available once the calendar flips over to 1 April 2020. The Swift’s fuel efficiency is impressive and the option of an AMT, which returns the same fuel efficiency as the manual transmission variants, makes it a versatile offering from Maruti.
