Datsun Go Plus- India's 1st Compact Family Wagon

Datsun, a fully owned subsidiary of Nissan Motors, is dedicatedly working towards affordable mobility solution since its inception in 1931. The brand was reintroduced by Nissan last year with the Datsun Go, an affordable B-Segment Hatch. Now, the company is gearing up to launch its second product, the Go Plus, which will be India’s first Compact Family Wagon. The term "Family Wagon" has been derived from three factors – It’s an extended hatchback making it a station wagon, it is a sub -four meter vehicle hence it is compact and has lots of space which makes it a perfect family car.

The car has a seating configuration of 2+3+2, the third row 2 seats can be used for kids as it is typically under four meters or one can even use it as luggage area. After folding the rear 2 seats the Go Plus has a boot capacity of 347 litres, which is good enough to accommodate luggage for a weekend outing or more.

The wagon will be available with the 1.2-litre petrol engine available in the outgoing Go hatchback. The 3 cylinder 1.2 litre petrol engine produces a maximum power of 68 PS @ 5,000 rpm with 104 Nm of peak torque @ 4000 rpm.  The mill has been re-tuned to benefit the increase in size and weight and it works brilliantly in its new avatar as well. The engine is quite refined and it pulls well from the start till the red line. Mated to a 5 speed transmission, in the GO+ the 2nd and 3rd gear are really tall which is convenient for both city and highway use.  The Go+ is quite comfortable cruising around in a high gear in city traffic and it is impressive that you don’t even need to go to a lower gear most of the time. The gearbox and light clutch work well enough if you work with a firm hand. Other things that make driving easy is the light steering. The wagon has got a soft suspension set-up, which makes it suitable for city uses. Having a turning radius of 4.6 metres, this particular car is easy to handle on open as well as congested roads. Its brakes work well courtesy ventilated discs towards the front and drum at the rear.

The Datsun Go Plus has a length of 3995 mm with an overall width of 1635mm and height measuring 1490mm which makes sure its wide and tall enough for better comfort and easy ingress and egress. The wheelbase of the compact station wagon at 2450mm makes sure there is sufficient legroom while a ground clearance of 170mm takes in its stride the worst roads one can throw at it. The design is based on the ‘Go Hatch" as a result it also inherits Datsun’s trademark “D-cut grille” which looks good with the three-dimensional headlights. The front profile looks attractive with sculpted bonnet and a sharp bumper comprising of three air intakes. While the side profile portrays strong shoulder lines that originate from the front to mid - point of the rear doors. The presence of black finish plastic side view mirrors, body coloured door handles and set of stylish hub caps further add to the appeal.

The compact family wagon carries the Go’s dash-board, however the quality has been uplifted. The centre console comprises of silver accentuated circular air vents right towards the top, below which is entertainment system which comprises of an Aux-in, USB port for charging mobiles, volume control and the power on off button. The Go Plus offers seat belts for all 3 rows, child lock, engine immobilizer and central locking.
