Its was disclosed by Volkswagen India that its Chakan plant, which is located near Pune, managed to ship 100,000 ‘Made in India’ Volkswagen cars to the Mexican market. This milestone was achieved by the Pune facility in less than two years after it started the car exports to Mexico from India. The Jetta Classico model, which is available in the Mexican market has been replaced by the Pune-built Vento. In the first half of 2015, according to a statement made by the company, the ‘Made in India’ Vento is among the top three popularly sold cars in Mexico.
In late 2014, Volkswagen polo, which is built in Chakan also commenced its export to Mexico by Volkswagen, making nearly every other car produced by the Volkswagen Pune plant in 2014, a export to Mexico. Both Vento and Polo are currently exported to 32 countries in Asia, Africa and North America. In these countries, the cars have been made available in both left-hand and right-hand drive configurations by Volkswagen India.
Carsten Goransch, Executive director – Logistics, Volkswagen India said. “The primary focus of the company has been on the domestic market in India.” He further added “However, with the decision to enter export markets, we have put our operations in India on a broader and economically sustainable base. With the success of our highest quality cars in a key market like Mexico, we can further increase our scope of export to other countries .”
