With the fifth-generation 2017 Verna, Hyundai has just one thing in mind in India: to take back the throne from the Honda City
The second iteration of Hyundai’s Fluidic design language has done wonders for the Korean automaker. Almost every product based on it is doing well in its respective segment – vehicles such as the Elite i20 and the Creta, for example. The pre-facelift Verna introduced the first iteration of Fluidic Sculpture design language in the country and its design played a vital role in making it more popular than its predecessor. However, it lost its charm when the current facelifted version – the Verna 4S – made an entry into the market.
The first sedan to adopt Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language was the new Sonata. However, the most striking one is the new Elantra, which is a looker. The good news is that the 2017 Verna closely resembles it. The grilles of both the upcoming Elantra and the Verna oddly resemble the ones that Audis sport, which is probably a result of roping in the man who was behind the design of several Audi models (including the original TT) and the upcoming Tucson – Peter Schreyer.
The concept of the next-generation Verna made its world debut in April at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. The spied production version looks quite identical to the concept, sans (obviously) the show car shenanigans. Most of the real estate at the front is occupied by the new hexagonal grille which is closely flanked by the new, slender, swept-back projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs. The sides feature a more accentuated coupe-like roofline in contrast to the current model, along with redesigned diamond-cut alloys. The rear features wraparound LED tail lamps and a little stubby boot with an integrated lip spoiler.
The overall length of the new Verna has increased slightly (5mm), along with a substantial increment in wheelbase and width – 30mm and 28mm, respectively, over the current car.
