2020 Honda City Diesel-Manual Fuel Efficiency: Claimed vs Real

How frugal is the City’s 1.5-litre diesel engine and can it match its claimed figure of 24.1kmpl?

Honda’s compact sedan, the City, has been on sale in India for over two decades. The carmaker launched the fifth-gen City in July 2020 and witnessed a total sales of 1,975 units in the first month alone, taking it to the top of the sales chart in the compact sedan segment. If you are eyeing one for your garage, you would want to take a look at its mileage in day-to-day conditions. We have already tested the fuel efficiency of the petrol-auto combo, now let’s see how the 1.5-litre diesel-manual performs. But before that, let’s look at the engine specs, claimed fuel efficiency, and the actual fuel efficiency of the sedan we tested:

The diesel-powered City couldn’t match its claimed figure in the city or on the highway. Its fuel efficiency on the highway was almost 3.5kmpl less than its claimed figure.

Here’s how it performed in mixed driving conditions:

When we used the diesel-powered City majorly in the city, it returned an average mileage of 16kmpl. When it was used mainly outside the city, the overall efficiency spiked up by around 3kmpl. When the commute was equally split between the city and highway, the fuel efficiency hovered around 17kmpl.
