Honda claims the fifth-gen City’s petrol-auto variant is capable of returning 18.4kmpl. Let’s put that to test, shall we?
The fifth-gen Honda City arrived on Indian shores on July 15 with a price tag of Rs 10.90 lakh to Rs 14.65 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is offered with a set of 1.5-litre petrol (121PS/145Nm) and diesel engines (100PS/200Nm). While the former is available with both a 6-speed manual and a 7-step CVT, the diesel motor comes mated to only the 6-speed gearbox. Honda offers the new City in three variants: V, VX and ZX and has kept the fourth-gen City on sale alongside. But right now, we are looking at the engine specs, claimed and actual fuel efficiency of the City automatic that we tested:
Engine Displacement |
1.5-litre Petrol Automatic |
Power |
121PS |
Torque |
145Nm |
Transmission |
7-step CVT |
Claimed fuel efficiency |
18.4kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (city) |
16.28kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (highway) |
20.62kmpl |
While the City fell short by over 2kmpl in the city, it surpassed the claimed fuel-efficiency figure by over 2kmpl when driven on the highway.

Here’s how it performed in mixed driving conditions:
Mileage |
City:Highway (50:50) |
City:Highway (25:75) |
City:Highway (75:25) |
18.19kmpl |
19.33kmpl |
17.18kmpl |
If your major usage is restricted to the city with light highway journeys, the City can return a fuel-efficiency figure of a little over 17kmpl. If you use the sedan mainly on wide stretches of roads and highways, the fuel efficiency should go up by more than 2kmpl. In case your travel is equally split between the city and highway, the City’s mileage could hover around the 18kmpl mark.

It is important to note that fuel efficiency depends on a combination of driving conditions, the car condition as well as your driving style, so your experience may vary from ours. If you own a fifth-gen City petrol auto, feel free to share your findings with us in the comments.
