The new-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza has been spied testing for the first time in India. Since its 2016 debut, the subcompact SUV only got one facelift -- in 2020. So, a generation update was long due. We expect the new model to be launched in 2022.
Since the test mule was fully camouflaged, it’s difficult to tell the differences. However, the spy shots suggest that the Brezza will retain its boxy stance, but with a completely revamped exterior.
The subcompact SUV was one of the more feature-packed offerings when it debuted five years ago. However, with time, the Brezza had started to betray its age. Currently, it features automatic LED projector headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and cruise control. Safety features include dual front airbags, rear parking camera, and hill-hold control.
The cabin is also expected to be overhauled, with the likely additions of wireless charging, a larger touchscreen infotainment system, connected car technology, and probably a sunroof.
What remains to be seen is if the new Brezza will be safer than the outgoing one. It currently has a 4-star safety rating, making it the safest Maruti yet (as per GNCAP).
The upcoming Brezza is unlikely to feature any change to its mechanicals. It is expected to retain the 104PS 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology. Transmission options will also likely be the same -- a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter AT. That said, the latter could be axed for a new unit.

Currently, the Brezza retails from Rs 7.61 lakh to Rs 11.19 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), and we expect the new-gen offering to sell at a premium. The subcompact SUV rivals the Toyota Urban Cruiser, Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, and Kia Sonet.
