Hyundai plans to install nearly 600 new public EV fast-charging stations across the country in next 7 years, boosting the booming charging infrastructure in India
Owning an electric vehicle (EV) in India is often perceived as a challenge for long-distance travel, mainly due to concerns over range anxiety and a limited charging network. However, things have started changing with the introduction of more long range EVs and the massive expansion of the charging network. And enabling the shift for EVs is also helped by Hyundai, who has started addressing these issues head-on by investing in the expansion of the EV charging network across the country and bringing more accessible EVs for the masses. The automaker is also set to launch a new electric SUV in January 2025, designed to offer a practical driving range for multiple applications. Here are 7 key reasons why you should consider making the switch to an EV.
Long Range EVs: No Range Anxiety
The electric car market in India has come a long way, with long-range EVs now available from mass market as well as luxury carmakers. A standout in this lineup is the Hyundai Ioniq 5, a luxury EV having all the creature comforts and boasting a powerful 72.6kWh battery and a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) electric motor that churns out 217 PS and 350 Nm of torque. With an impressive ARAI-claimed range of 631 km, the Ioniq 5 can easily manage long distance travel without any worries.
And if you feel the Ioniq 5 is a bit of a stretch, fret not as the carmaker has a lineup of mass market electric models in the pipeline, the first of which we’ll see in the flesh in January 2025.
Charging Station Already Located In All Major Cities
According to the report received from the Ministry Of Power, India already had more than 12,000 EV charging stations operational across the country, as of February 2024. Out of these, Maharashtra alone has over 3,000 EV charging stations, Delhi has 1,886 charging stations, while Karnataka also has more than 1,000 charging stations already in operation.
Hyundai’s Contribution
Further driving the growth of the EV charging network, Hyundai also made significant strides in expanding its EV charging network, with stations already located in key cities like Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. But that's not all—the company is building a robust pan-India network, with charging stations already installed along some of the country's busiest highways, including Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Jaipur, Hyderabad-Vijayawada, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Surat, Bengaluru-Pune, and Pune-Kolhapur.
Expansion Of Fast Charging Network
To drive EV growth in India, Hyundai plans to install nearly 600 public EV fast-charging stations across the country over the next 7 years. The first 50 fast-charging points will be set up by the end of 2024. The automaker has also signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government to establish 100 EV charging stations across the state by 2027. As part of this initiative, 10 stations will be up and running by the close of 2024, with three already fully operational at Spencer Plaza and BSR Mall in Chennai, and Hotel Seasons in Tiruvannamalai. The remaining seven stations will soon join the network, bringing more convenience to EV owners.
Support For Every EV User
Regardless of the charging output supported by your EV battery, Hyundai has you covered. The company’s EV chargers are available in multiple configurations to accommodate a wide range of EVs. These EV chargers are available in DC 150 kW + DC 60 kW + DC 30 kW or DC 150 kW + DC 30 kW or DC 60 kW. Hyundai's EV charging stations are strategically located in prime locations, offering convenient amenities like coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping areas for a seamless experience. To enhance customer support, marshals are on hand at most stations, while 24/7 CCTV surveillance ensures top-notch safety, giving you peace of mind.
myHyundai App: Easy Access To Charging Stations
Hyundai has collaborated with partners including ChargeZone, Statiq, Shell India and more in order to provide easy access to more than 10,000 EV charging stations across the country. No matter where you are, the myHyundai app will guide you to the nearest charging station whenever needed.
Hyundai’s Upcoming EV
Building on all the initiatives mentioned above, Hyundai is also set to introduce an all-new electric SUV in India — the Creta EV — in January 2025. Test mules of the vehicle have been spotted multiple times, showcasing a design similar to the facelifted Creta ICE (internal combustion engine), albeit with a host of EV-specific changes. Hyundai is yet to disclose details about its battery pack and electric motor. However, we expect it to have multiple battery pack options and it could offer a claimed range of over 400 km.
So these were the top 7 reasons why you should consider buying an EV in India. You can also kickstart your EV journey with the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV, which will likely offer a practical driving range, supported by Hyundai's strong charging infrastructure.
