BMW, Mercedes engage in verbal duels

The luxury car segment is known to be ruled by three ace players in the car market, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Now, it is said that the on-going fight between the brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz has reached to the next level. Both the luxury brands are trying very hard to save their own regions to an extent, where literally, the verbal duel has started. Apparently,Mercedes-Benz, which had been ruling the luxury car segment until 2009, has given the reign to BMW. Mercedes-Benz, however accused the rival German brand of offering its vehicles at discounted price to ramp-up its sales. The accusation was nevertheless denied by Mr Andreas Schaff of BMW, which according to him, had managed to attain the top position based on the strength of its brand value and products.

Mr Debasis Mitra, the director of sales and marketing, Mercedes-Benz India, had reportedly said in a verbal combat that the BMW leadership had been attained by laying the stepping stones on the basis of discounting and offering stripped down models and low-entry cars. He is also reported to have added that the Mercedes-Benz will never take that route and will continue to maintain the product quality, at the same time heading for the same aggressive pricing as well.

BMW is believed to have gained its supremacy over the others, after offering their BMW 3 series sedan as a corporate edition, in other words, a stripped down version that does not include features like the sunroof, which its contemporaries include. The Mercedes-Benz had however, dismissed the idea, that the stripped down versions will not work in their favour, due to their lack of entry in certain segments like mini-SUV cars, on which their rivals have capitalized. The Mercedes-Benz India had recently launched its advanced version of Mercedes-Benz C class sedan at Rs 29.79 lakhs for its petrol variant and Rs 30.30 lakhs for its diesel variant.
