In a bid to make its cars more frugal, milder on the planet and yet powerful, BMW has confirmed the development of its modular family, next-gen engines which will power its future cars. The all-new three and four cylinder Efficient Dynamics petrol and diesel engines will be the smoothest, most fuel-efficient and the most powerful to have come out from BMW. Comparing these new engines with the existing ones, as per the claims, the new set of motors will have a 5 per cent drop in CO2 emissions, an average increment of 7PS on power along with 20Nm more torque on offer.
However, there is still enough time when we get to see a BMW car equipped with these new motors. The first of the lot to be powered by the new modular family engines will be the next-generation 3 Series which will make its debut in latter half of 2017. Post that, the new engines will find its way across other BMW and Mini models as well.
Courtesy the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust gas treatment along with a smart new cylinder cooling system, the NOx levels are kept under control as BMW has managed to cut down on emissions. Raking more power, BMW will also be introducing twin-scroll turbochargers for the first time on the new four-cylinder diesel engines which were earlier seen only on its high-performance diesel units. Talking about India, there has been no official statement yet about the new set of motors reaching here. But, we surely hope that BMW launches these new engines here parallel to the rest of the world.
