Boston Consulting Group- 12 million driverless cars on the road by 2035

Leading global management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group said that by the year 2035, fully automated driverless cars will account for 12 million vehicles a year which would be nearly 10 per cent of the global sales.

In a survey conducted by BCG, 44 per cent of U.S. drivers showed interest in buying a fully autonomous vehicle within the next 10 years. The results also revealed that 20 percent of them are willing to pay an extra $5,000 or more for the advanced technology required to operate such a vehicle.

Thomas Dauner, head of BCG's global automotive practice said, "This will be as radical a change as the auto industry has seen in 100 years."

As of now, vehicle manufacturers including Audi, General Motors and Mercedes-Benz are already working on semi-automated systems which requires small human interface. Moreover, there are companies like Google and Tesla that are developing driverless cars and have achieved much success in the field. But as per the saying, even Rome was not build in a day and time is the only factor that lie between the semi-automated systems to fully self-driving cars and by 2035, its very much possible.

At this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW displayed their concept vehicles with various autonomous capabilities.

Daimler's chief executive, Dieter Zetsche, and Audi's chief technology officer, Ulrich Hackenberg have same thoughts on the driverless cars. They are optimistic that various autonomous systems are expected to be rolled out in stages over the next five to 10 years.

BCG's Xavier Mosquet said, “Twenty years from now, "people will not own cars in large cities," thanks to widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles.”
