Demand for diesel cars on the rise, delays in delivery

Diesel that powers industries, transport and agriculture sector has become a favorite fuel of car industry in India as well which is facing a downtrend.The reason why car makers are after diesel is that the fuel is around 40 percent cheap and 30 percent more efficient than petrol. Also, there is a revival of buyers for diesel cars soon after petrol prices soared recently. This sudden increase in diesel car buyers has resulted in demand for diesel cars and thus it also made potential customers to experience long waiting periods.

Sources suggest that Maruti and Toyota have indicated above normal rise in demand for diesel cars and thus the waiting period for diesel cars has increased since last month. According to an estimate, petrol price have risen to 34% after the control on petrol price was freed last year. Furthermore, the difference in diesel and petrol price is still large upto Rs 26 at some places. It was only Rs 10 last year. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) an industry body is also said to have forecasted a downtrend in growth of car sales by 16% compared to a growth of 30% witnessed last year.

Experts suggest that affordability is everything for the middle class aspiring to upgrade to a car from a two-wheeler. The war becomes more intense in the light of inflation and rise in food prices. Diesel cars in India have reportedly constituted 65% of the total car sales in India in the period of January to May compared to 50% last year in the same period. It has thus affected delivery and the waiting time has increased considerably. According to sources, it is currently five months for Maruti Swift and six months for Maruti Swift Dzire. Meanwhile, it is five months for Volkswagen Vento, three for newly launched Hyundai Verna Fluidic and over a month for Toyota Corolla Altis.  Recently Volkswagen increased the price of Volkswagen Vento by 2.2% as over 23,649 Ventos were sold in September last year and most of them were Volkswagen Vento diesels.With the rise in demand it is observed that car manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan Toyota and Mitsubishi have plans to reorient their production capacity to meet the demand.
