GM India production hindered at Halol plant due to strike

General Motors India, the fifth biggest auto mobile manufacturer are facing crisis at the Halol facility in Gujarat. General Motors India confirmed, the news that, the manufacturing is discontinued at the Halol plant as the workers went on strike on 28th October, 2010. The reason for strike is wages, as per the workers they want a hike from their current salary.
The capacity of the plant is to manufacture 150 wheelers everyday. Around 450 workers announced strike before beginning with the first shift of the day. Due to strike, the second shift which starts at 4 in the evening, has been stopped in the plant and talks are still going on between the management and workers. General Motors Vice President, P Balendran confirmed that, the production has been stopped because workers are asking for hike in wages. The talks with the workers are going on and the company soon expects a key solution, he added with optimism.

The GM India, Halol Plant in Gujarat, has integrated the capacity to manufacture 85,000 cars yearly in three shifts. But currently, the company functions in two shifts. The plant is resourceful to produce 150 cars each day. The company has employed 900 permanent workers which are equally divided into two shifts. There are around 100 staff working on contract basis who did not participate in the strike.
At the Halol facility in Gujarat, the company manufactures the Chevrolet Aveo UVA, the sedan Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Optra, Chevrolet Cruze and MUV (multi utility vehicle) Chevrolet Tavera.

Other than Halol, General Motors India has plans to make the Talegaon plant more resourceful. The facility in Maharastra currently manufacturers the hatchback models Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Beat, the company wishes to increase the capacity of the plant so that it manufacturers 1.4 lacs cars every year.
The market share of GM India has increased and to overcome the rising demand, the production of the car was increased by starting the second shift at the Talegaon and Halol plants.
This years sales graph are scoring high for the GM by 8,617 cars were sold in September which is 12.58 per cent to the last year 7,654 cars.
