Hyundai, Ford, Renault-Nissan and Other Automakers Halt Operations Due to Chennai Rains

The heavy rains witnessed by the Tamil Nadu capital has left the city in despair and its citizens stranded in wake of these adverse conditions. The floods have affected all of us in one way or another and now the ripple effect of this situation has also managed to influence the automotive industry. Automakers like Hyundai (India's second largest auto manufacturer), Renault-Nissan, Ford and others have their manufacturing plants based out of Chennai and had to suspend operations at their facilities. It is the second time these Goliath automakers took these measures over the course of last two weeks.
Chennai streets are waterlogged and many places in the city are now inaccessible. Concerned with employee safety, Ford India has halted its engine and assembly plant’s production operations. Three shift have been suspended by the Hyundai at its its facility and the Korean automaker is planning on recommencing its operations as the weather conditions in Chennai improve. Similarly, Renault-Nissan will also resume operations after the conditions improve and until then, the company will keep its plants closed. Hyundai produces about 6.8 lakh vehicles annually, whereas Ford and Renault-Nissan plants manage an annual production run of 3.4lakh engines & 2 lakh vehicles, and 4.8 lakh cars, respectively.
