Which of these diesel-powered sub-4 metre SUVs has the most usable performance on offer?
This year, the sub-4m SUV segment saw two new players enter the fray. The Mahindra XUV300 was the first model to be launched in 2019, and it was followed more recently by the Hyundai Venue. We recently had the opportunity to run the Venue through our own tests in real-world conditions. Let’s compare how the diesel variant fared against the diesel variants of its competitors.
Here are the engine specs of the sub-4m SUV options:

Three of the five SUVs here have the same engine capacity of 1.5-litres, followed by the Venue and the Brezza with smaller diesel engines. However, the three that offer an automatic transmission option are the Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Tata models. The XUV300 is the most powerful and torquiest here with 115PS and 300Nm, which is 5PS and 40Nm more than its closest rival - the Nexon. Hyundai and Maruti are tied for the lowest power of 90PS while the latter also has the least torque of 200Nm. It is worth noting that Ford’s 1.5-litre is also on the lower side in terms of the torque on offer at 205Nm.

The XUV300’s power and torque advantage made it the quickest in nearly all acceleration tests except for the quarter mile one. It reached a 100kmph in just 12.21s, 0.15s quicker than the next best times from the Brezza and EcoSport. The XUV300 was 2.28s faster to accelerate from 40-100kmph and third-gear acceleration was 0.85s quicker than the Nexon which claimed the second spot.
However, the Nexon’s in-gear acceleration performance was contrasted by its 0-100kmph and quarter mile timings. In both tests, it was the slowest model here. Surprisingly, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza was the fastest to cover a quarter mile. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Venue was always somewhere in the middle, never the fastest nor the slowest.

Both 5-speed sub-4m diesel SUVs set slow times for in-gear acceleration tests. Ford’s sub-4m SUV was slowest to accelerate in 3rd gear and second-slowest to get up to speed while in 4th gear. It was vice-versa for the Maruti Suzuki Vitata Brezza, slowest in 4th gear and second-slowest in 3rd gear.

The Mahindra XUV300 is the only one here that offers disc brakes on all four wheels and the brake test results show the difference. It has the shortest stopping distance from both speeds - 1.86m sooner from 100kmph and 1.12m earlier when braking from 80kmph. The next best at coming to a halt was the Ford EcoSport while the Tata Nexon came third.
The surface conditions were a bit wet while testing the Hyundai Venue’s brakes, which would have increased the braking distance and is probably why it is last on the table. However, if we take refer the Venue 1.0-litre turbo-petrol’s braking distance, theoretically, the Brezza has the longest stopping distance.
