Hyundai and Kia Motors are committed these days to develop 10-speed automatic gearboxes. The 10 speed slush box that Hyundai and Kia are jointly developing will be used in the next generation 2012 Hyundai Genesis and Hyundai Equus sedans sometime in 2014. The move has come after the German transmission maker ZF unveiled a 9 speed automatic gearbox which will offer as high fuel economy as 16% and will be used in next generation front wheel drive BMW cars.

Hyundai Motor Group president Park Seong Hyon said the new gearbox will likely be used in the Hyundai Genesis and Hyundai Equus sedans. The 10 speed automatic gearbox will not just ensure seamless power delivery with split second gear shifts, but will also make for better fuel economy. Just like Hyundai i20 diesel it will make for very frugal highway cruising. Hyundai India was the first car maker to offer a six speed transmission in mass market, small cars in India with the unveiling of 6 speed manual gearbox in Hyundai i20 diesel.

Hyundai Verna Fluidic sedan adorns a 6 speed manual gearbox whereas the flagship sedan-Hyundai Genesis, unveiled eight months before (not available in India) already features 8 speed automatic gearbox. Lexus was the first automaker to offer an eight-speed automatic, which debuted in its flagship LS sedan. Audi also offers an eight-speed automatic (sourced from ZF) in a number of its vehicles including the A7 and A8. Automatic gearboxes are getting more likable each passing year and Hyundai-Kia’s latest technological effort will prove to be a milestone in their journey.
