Kia is all set to enter one of the highly contested SUV segments (sub-4m) with the Sonet. The carmaker took the wraps off the production-spec Sonet on August 7 and revealed some key details. Now, ahead of its mid-September launch, here’s a look at how it fares against its rivals on paper:

Ford’s EcoSport is the longest SUV in the segment and the Mahindra XUV300 is the widest. The Kia Sonet and Ford EcoSport are the tallest offerings here while the Mahindra XUV300 takes the cake when the wheelbase of all the sub-4m SUVs is considered.

Petrol:
The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine while the rest are offered with a 1.2-litre petrol unit (turbocharged in the case of Nexon and XUV300). Kia and Hyundai also offer their sub-4m SUVs with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

Most Powerful: Ford EcoSport
Torquiest: Mahindra XUV300
When the output figures of all sub-4m SUVs are considered, it is the Ford EcoSport that is the most powerful of the lot while the maximum torque is produced by the Mahindra XUV300’s petrol engine. In terms of transmission options, Mahindra’s sub-4m SUV is the only model that does not get an automatic gearbox with its petrol engine. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport get a 4-speed and a 6-speed torque converter respectively, while Tata offers the Nexon with a 6-speed AMT. Kia and Hyundai offer the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol units of their SUVs with both a 7-speed DCT and a 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission), which is essentially a clutchless manual gearbox.
Diesel:
Except for the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, all the other sub-4m SUVs are offered with diesel engines as well.

The Mahindra XUV300 comes on top as the most powerful and torquiest sub-4m SUV. The Hyundai Venue and Ford EcoSport do not get an automatic gearbox with their diesel engines. While Tata and Mahindra offer the diesel variants of the Nexon and XUV300 with a 6-speed AMT option, the Kia Sonet gets a segment-first 6-speed torque converter.

Kia is not the only brand that will soon debut in the sub-4m SUV segment. Carmakers Toyota, Renault and Nissan are also gearing up to launch their sub-4m SUVs christened Urban Cruiser, Kiger and Magnite respectively.
