Low-cost car plan with Bajaj is still on: Nissan

During the launch of Nissan Sunny in India, the Vice-President of the Japanese brand, Giles Normand has reportedly said that their partnership with Bajaj Auto is still in the discussion stage. Nissan India is apparently going to be associated with Bajaj Auto to develop synergy in manufacturing an ultra low cost car . While the companies are still involved in discussions, they have informed that the next announcement on the decision will be a joint announcement. However, in the Nissan-Renault-Bajaj Auto alliance, the Japanese and the French auto brands are not content with the pace at which project is moving with Bajaj Auto.

Nissan has even declined to divulge any information on the time-lines of the announcement of their fruitful association. In fact, the Japanese manufacturer has expressed that they might introduce the low-cost car on their own without having anything to do with the Indian automobile manufacturer. Kiminobu Tokuyama, the MD of Nissan Motor India has also added that while they are surely going to introduce a good product in any segment, they are just skeptical about the time-lines.

The project of developing an ultra low-cost small car was initiated in 2008, when Nissan –Renault had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bajaj Auto. The small car was expected to be launched in 2012. According to the plan, Baja Auto is to develop the design, manufacturing and sourcing, while Nissan-Renault will handle the marketing in India and abroad. Nissan-Renault is said to invest around Rs 4,500 crores in the project to set up a manufacturing plant in Chennai to produce 4 lakh units per annum.
