The best-selling car of all times Maruti 800 has been successfully providing the Indian population with a privilege of owing a four wheeler, for over 3 decades now. A large number of people still own this car in India and people in small cities and towns continue to buy the BS3 compliant variant of this car. But Maruti Suzuki India has recently taken an extreme step regarding the future of this legendary car. The company is working a new small car which is supposedly a replacement of Maruti 800 which is expected to be rolled out by the end of 2012. This year might mark the end of the 30 year long journey of this superb piece of automotive engineering.

This new small car is expected to be based on the existing platform of Maruti Suzuki’s Alto. Under the hood, this new replacement car might use the age-old 800cc F8D engine that has been powering various models of Maruti 800 since 1983. This new small car needs to fill in the shoes of the power-packed Maruti 800 that changed the future of cars in India a long time ago. In order to make this new car compliant with the recent times and customers’ expectations the F8D engine might undergo some upgrades. Almost a decade ago, Maruti rendered this engine with four valves/cylinders and fuel injection technology but in this era of cut-throat competition where car makers are making every possible move to win, Maruti needs to bring in technologically superior and efficient engines.

Since this car is considered as a replacement of Maruti 800 and sits on the platform of the entry-level Alto, the proper positioning of this car in Maruti’s line-up however remains equivocal. With technology upgrades in the F8D engine, the price and position of this new car is more likely to sit between the Maruti Alto F8D and Maruti Alto K10. This strategy is anticipated to work wonders for Maruti Suzuki when it comes to keeping the buyers from turning toward cars like Hyundai Eon and upcoming small cars from Datsun. The company always prices its products with small difference so that the buyers limit their purchases to the Maruti family.
