Maruti Suzuki, India's largest automobile manufacturer announced today that it is going to discontinue its lowest-Price model, Maruti 800, here. The news came as a surprise to many market analysts as it was expected that Maruti 800 model will be up-graded to make it compatible to Euro-IV emission norms. Mr R C Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, said today that the company has no plans of up-grading its Maruti 800 model and it would be discontinued in 13 Indian cities starting from April this year.
Maruti 800 is the oldest model of the company in India and Maruti has sold thousands of units of this model in the country since its launch way back in last decade. After the discontinuation of Maruti 800, Maruti Alto will become the lowest-priced small car in Maruti's Indian portfolio. The move will also affect the value of Maruti 800 in used car market as the model already has a high presence in used car market.
Maruti recently launched its new cars in India which is powered with its K-series engines including Maruti A-Star and Maruti Ritz. The New K-series engine fulfills all Euro-IV emission norms and has a better fuel efficiency as well. Besides Maruti 800, the company was also planning to up-grade its most popular small cars in India including Maruti Wagon R and Maruti Alto. Now, as Maruti 800 will be discontinued, the up-gradation of other small cars are also skeptical, though company has announced that it will upgrade these models soon.
Maruti Recently launched its MPV Maruti Eeco at Delhi Auto Expo and it is also planning to launch its first-ever high segment sedan model Maruti Kizashi in its domestic market soon.
