Maruti 800, the first made-in-India car is going to be phase-out from India soon, as Maruti Suzuki India has decided to discontinue Maruti 800 model in the country. The main reason behind this decision is the implementation of new emission norms BS-IV which are going to be implemented in 13 Indian cities, starting from April 2010.
The car will be phased-out in 13 Indian cities including Metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, kolkata, and Chennai. The company is planning to phase-out the car in whole country in coming 4 to 5 years.
The company managed to sell only 3,178 units of the Maruti 800 in February 2010 as compare to the 20,000 units in March 2003. The model is available with a price tag of Rs 2.10 lakh. Where the sales of Maruti's small car Alto model is touching a new height every month, the sales of 800 has gone down to a very low level.
At present, Maruti India has a market share of 54% with selling some of the most popular cars in India including small cars like Maruti Alto and Maruti Wagon R, hatchbacks like Maruti Swift, Maruti Ritz, Maruti A-Star and Maruti Zen Estilo, and sedans like Maruti Swift Dzire and Maruti SX4. With this, the company is also planning to launch a new small car in India by year 2012 and it will be using self-sufficient R&D in the manufacturing of this car.
