May 2011– Auto Sales Review

In May-11, passenger car sales growth in general slowed down because of increasing petrol prices and interest rates, except for Hyundai India whose sales increased mainly due to launch of new Hyundai Verna Fluidic which launched recently.Given the rising petrol prices, the demand for diesel variants of small cars is expected to rise, while the companies are expected to continue the discounts or promotional offers to increase the sales.

Tata Motors India continued to de-grow in Tata Indica and Tata Indigo range by 35%YOY, while Tata Nano provided the respite which showed 85% YOY growth in May-11 at 6,515 units. The Tata Sumo, Tata Safari, Tata Aria and Tata Venture range accounted for sales of 3,121 nos., higher by 15% over May last year.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s newly launched Mahindra Verito showed good response in May -11 at 1,291 units. Total passenger vehicles including cars and utility vehicles (UV) reported 19.8% growth in May -11. Given the rising petrol prices, the demand for diesel variants of small cars is expected to rise, while the companies are expected to continue the discounts or promotional offers to increase the sales.

Q4FY11 Revenue growth was 27.8%YOY at `67.8bn, raw material prices in Q4FY11 were higher by 400 bps on YOY basis. The operating margin for the quarter further fell largely due to increasing employee cost to 12.7% .Excluding extra-ordinary income and expenses, the net Net margin was at 8.9%, as compared to 10.8% in profit margin was at 16.1% as compared to 14.5% in Q4FY10.
