Mercedes Benz India to foray into mid-range car segment

One of the most prominent luxury car makers in India, Mercedes-Benz is planning to dock into the mid-range car segment in the country. This would surely mean that Mercedes-Benz will take its premium brand to masses in India. Rumor has it, the new models of Mercedes-Benz in mid range car segment could be launched in the next 2-3 years. These cars in India will surely create waves in the Indian car market. As per the CEO and MD of Mercedes-Benz India, Mr. Peter Honegg, the firm is mulling to dock into the mid-range car segment in the Indian car market in next 2 to 3 years. Entering into the mid range car segment, Mercedes will attract much larger masses and this will in turn boost the sales in India.

He also said that the price of the expected mid range cars by Mercedes-Benz will be kept below the Mercedes-Benz C-Class model, which is presently the most cheapest car variant by Mercedes Benz in India. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class price is tagged competitively to woo the customers in India. The proposed mid range cars by Mercedes-Benz will be CKD or completely knockdown units and are expected to be assembled at the Mercedes-Benz’s Chakan plant located in Pune, Maharashtra. At present, Mercedes-Benz C-Class comprise of about 35% of Mercedes’ total car sales in the country. The passenger car sales in India by Mercedes-Benz have been growing at rapid level. It has shown a significant growth of 35% during the months of January to September in the FY2011.

Mercedes-Benz managed to sell more than 5635 cars during the above mentioned period of time. In the year 2010, Mercedes-Benz sold only 4158 cars in the same time frame. According to Mr. Honegg, the month of September was the best month for Mercedes-Benz sales in India. About 745 units of cars were sold in September, which showed 12% growth when compared to last year. Mercedes-Benz is expected to touch the mark of 7000 units by selling cars by the end of this year. Mr. Honegg is completely aware of the higher interest rates and sky rocketing fuel prices, which has created a little bumps in the car sales. However, sales growth are slow now, but Mercedes-Benz has full confidence that India will become the 3rd largest car market in the world in next 10 years.
