AMG, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz is now looking forward to use the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine in models other than CLA 45 AMG, GLA 45 AMG and A45 AMG. Powered by the same turbocharged engines, these AMG cars belt out power of 355bhp.

Tobias Moers, head of AMG said, ‘It’s probably something we should consider. He further added, '‘We haven’t decided anything but in my own mind, as an engineer, I think it could be an interesting solution to have a high-powered four-cylinder petrol engine in a car that’s not a compact - maybe even a saloon. There are markets in the world where engine size affects taxes, and this could be an interesting technical answer to that’'.

Moreover, as seen in past, the manufacturer has brought more than one AMG variant in C-Class; they used traditional V8 engine in C63 AMG while the C45 AMG was rolled out with 2.0-litre, 4 cylinder engine. Thus, imparting a small turbocharged engine will not affect the cars from getting the big V8 engines. On the high performance diesel cars, Mr. Moers said, ‘The market for highly tuned diesel performance cars is very small, ‘and in any case, you can have a performance diesel and it doesn’t necessarily give you such a big difference over a more modern, efficient, performance petrol engine.’'

In India, the company recently launched the GL63 AMG for Rs 1.66 crore (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The SUV in-houses a 5.5 litre, V8 engine that develops a power of 557bhp in a range of 5,250-5,750rpm and peak torque of 760Nm in between 2,000-5,000rpm. With the introduction of GL63 AMG, the manufacturer expanded its AMG lineup which includes C63 AMG, E63 AMG, CLA 45 AMG in saloon segment, SLS AMG in Coupé segment while in Cabriolets and Roadster segment, the company offers SLS AMG Roadster and SLK 55 AMG Roadster. In SUV segment apart from the recently launched GL63, the company also offers G63 AMG. In India, the engine displacement plays a major role in taxation of a car and thus, having a smaller 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine will certainly help in keeping the overall cost of the vehicle in check.
