Both electric SUVs are set to go on sale in India in late 2019
Update: The Hyundai Kona Electric SUV has been launched in India priced at Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Read the details here.
As MG Motor and Hyundai gear up to launch the eZS and Kona Electric by the end of this year, it’s time we took a closer look at the two electric SUVs which will go up against each other in our market. Both eSUVs will be among the first long-range EVs to go on sale in the country as the ones (Mahindra e2o Plus, eVerito) that are currently on sale do not offer a range of more than 140km (claimed) on a single charge.
Before we dive into the comparison, it must be noted that the cars pictured here may not feature the specifications as the models that are set to be launched here. Where the MG eSUV here is a China-spec model, the Hyundai Kona Electric pictured here is the one that is sold in the UK. However, the India-spec versions of these eSUVs are expected to be similarly equipped.

Where the eZS looks like a conventional SUV, the Kona screams EV from the word go. The eZS’s front end features striking looking headlamps and a faux grille that houses the charging port. The Hyundai Kona, on the other hand, features a split headlamp setup where the main lamps are placed on the bumper while the LED DRLs sit on the edge of the bonnet. Like the MG, even the Kona’s charging port is at the front where the grille is usually located. |

View both eSUVs from the side and you’ll notice that the MG features a clean profile while the Kona EV looks muscular thanks ot its heavily cladded wheel arches. Both eSUVs are equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels. Although the MG eZS is the longer of the two, it’s the Hyundai that features a longer wheelbase. |

The MG Motor eZS carries forward its clean design philosophy to the rear as well, while the Kona looks bulky thanks to its squat stance and that huge bumper which houses reverse lamps and turn indicators. The MG eZS is not only longer and wider than the Kona Electric but it is taller as well. |
Interior:
Where the eZS features a black-brown theme inside the cabin, the Kona Electric gets a lighter grey-white colour combination. Moreover, where the Kona EV comes with a free standing infotainment screen, the infotainment system in the MG sits flush in the central console.
Both SUVs get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is expected to feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. MG has also confirmed that the eZS will get eSIM tech like the Hector. It allows the driver to control car features like climate control, ignition start-stop, among others, through a mobile app. We expect the Hyundai to be at par with MG in terms of features since the Korean carmaker is set to debut a similar connected car technology with its upcoming sub-4 metre SUV, the Venue.
Where the eZS gets a conventional analogue instrument cluster, the Kona is equipped with a digital instrument cluster featuring a 7-inch screen.

The MG eZS will be equipped with a panoramic sunroof, unlike the Hyundai Kona. |
The MG will be powered by an electric motor with a net power output of 150PS and 350Nm of torque. MG claims that the India-spec eZS will have a range of 300km on a single charge. |
The India-spec Kona EV is expected to feature a 39kWh battery pack from the lower-spec variant sold in the UK. It gets an electric motor that makes 136PS of power and 395Nm of peak torque. Like the MG, the Kona EV is likely to have a range of over 300km on a single charge. |
Launch & Price:
As mentioned above, both electric SUVs are expected to debut in India by the end of this year. The Hyundai Kona electric is expected to be priced around Rs 25 lakh while the MG eZS is likely to undercut the Hyundai with a price tag starting just above the Rs 20 lakh mark.
