MG Motor has disclosed internet-enabled features that its first offering for India, the Hector, will pack when launched in June this year. First up, the Hector will get a large 10.4-inch vertically-stacked, tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system. It will come with a host of connectivity options, real time data as well as emergency and convenience-enhancing features powered by the internet and AI (artificial intelligence).
The Hector’s infotainment system will be powered by an Android-based operating system and it will get an eSIM for continuous internet access via a 4G cellular connection (5G-ready) from Airtel, which will be free for a ‘few’ years. This feature will enable MG to send OTA (over the air) updates too.
The Hector’s infotainment system will have a customisable home screen with multiple backlight options to break the monotony. There will be Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and Gaana application with a premium account for music playback. Like smartphones, the infotainment system will offer messaging function and a file browser to search files from its 16GB internal storage.
Apart from the entertainment options, the Hector’s infotainment system will also offer convenience-enhancing features like navigation (powered by TomTom) with live traffic alerts, a 360-degree parking camera, AI-enabled voice recognition, which MG claims has been developed to understand Indian accents, TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system), and separate controls for media, phone and system alerts.
Apart from the above mentioned features, MG will also offer an iSMART mobile application that will allow users to control the AC, door lock/unlock, tailgate and even open and close the sunroof.
In terms of safety features integrated into the infotainment system, the MG Hector will get an E-Call feature that will send an alert to your emergency contact in case the airbags are deployed. The iSMART application can also thoroughly scan the car to detect any malfunction.
The Hector’s ‘Find My Car’ function will help locate the vehicle in a parking lot while the geo-fencing feature will send an alert on the owner’s mobile phone if the car crosses a set perimeter.
Other highlights include dynamic turn indicators, a panoramic sunroof, multi-spoke alloy wheels and LED DRLs. It will also get an auto-dimming IRVM and a 7-inch MID (multi-info display) as well.
The MG Hector will be offered with two engine options - a diesel unit and a petrol motor with mild-hybrid technology. The diesel engine is the same 2.0-litre unit that powers the Jeep Compass. It churns out 173PS of power and 350Nm of torque. The 1.5-litre petrol engine, on the other hand, will be mated to a mild-hybrid system (a first for India in the mass market segment) and is capable of dishing out 143PS and 250Nm. The diesel engine is likely to be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox while the petrol engine will be coupled to a dual-clutch automatic transmission, likely to be a 6-speed unit.
Set to be launched in June 2019, the MG Hector is expected to be priced from Rs 15 lakh onwards. When launched, the Hector will lock horns with the Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and the upcoming Hyundai Tucson facelift.
