Although no details are available yet, we suspect it could be the Baojun E100 EV
- The E100 EV was spied testing in India.
- Is powered by a single electric motor good for 39PS/110Nm, has a range of 155km.
- Maruti is also planning to launch the WagonR EV in India, but it will be bigger than the E100 EV.
Recently, MG revealed its plan to launch five SUVs in India by 2022, including one electric SUV -- eZS. Now, a new report suggests that the British brand is also planning to launch a sub-Rs 10 lakh electric car in the Indian market.
Talking to the media, Rajeev Chhaba, MD, MG Motor India, reportedly said, “We feel that for markets like India, an electric car priced below Rs 10 lakh will work and the company is working on making it possible. We expect our second EV launch will be priced below Rs 10 lakh.”

Although Chhaba revealed no details about the affordable EV, we believe that it could be the E100 EV which has already been spotted testing in the country. The E100 is a 2-seater city car powered by a single electric motor producing 39PS of power and 110Nm of torque. It has a single-charge range of 155km.
As far as its launch is concerned, Chabba added, “We will take a final decision only after watching the policy clarity in the space." So, expect the MG EV to not arrive before 2021, only after all the five SUVs are launched in the country. If launched by 2022, the MG EV would be eligible for benefits under the government’s FAME II scheme - a subsidy of around Rs 1.5 lakh.
MG is not the only carmaker to set its eyes on the affordable EV space in the country. Carmakers like Maruti, Tata, Renault and Toyota have also shown a similar intent. While Maruti is expected to bring in the Wagon R EV (already being tested in India), Tata is expected to launch the Tiago and Tigor EV in the country and follow these up with the Altroz EV in 2020. Toyota is also developing affordable EVs in collaboration with Suzuki and might launch it in a couple of years. French carmaker Renault is also expected to launch the Kwid EV in India, which is expected to go into production globally by mid-2019.
