If you got your driving licence in 2000, chances are, you are up for renewal in 2020

The COVID-19 scenario means that much of the usual protocols in the various walks of life have had to take a back seat. This has become a headache for some, especially those whose motor vehicle documents had expired, or were going to expire, after the lockdown came into effect. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in an effort to provide relief to such people, has extended the validity of all motor vehicle documents till December 31.

A previous order had already extended this deadline to September 31, but in lieu of the ongoing situation, the decision has been taken to extend it till the end of the year. What does this mean for private vehicle owners? If your registration certificate was due to expire anytime after February 2020, it is automatically valid till the end of the year. This is also true for any kind of fitness tests and permits that have to be renewed for commercial vehicles on a yearly basis.

If you’re a private buyer, be sure to check your RC if you bought your petrol car in 2006 and diesel car in 2011. Your RC will be expiring this year. Also, if you bought the car second hand, and your initial date of registration falls in these years, you could be up for renewal.

What’s more, if your driving licence has or will expire in this period, the ministry has set December 31 as the new deadline. Driving licences are generally issued for a period of 20 years, at least early on in the life of a person. So, anyone who got their licence in the year 2000 will be up for renewal this year. You could also be up for renewal if you are a senior citizen and had your licence renewed in 2010.

Depending on how the situation develops, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways could once again extend the validity of these documents. We will keep you updated on the same, if and when it happens.
