Volkswagen UP! has an equivocal air surrounding the possibility of its launch in India. The car was supposed to be exhibited in the Auto Expo 2012 but to the utter dismay of Volkswagen fans there was no Up! in the VW stands. Following the Auto Expo were some rumors that the company has deferred the launch of VW UP! hatchback for three years. These rumors were burned down by another announcement which suggested that the decision about the launch would be finalized by the end of 2012. Recently another speculation about VW UP! has emerged which reveals that the CEO of the company Martin Winterkorn had ordered the development of UP! in 2007 as a successor to Volkswagen Beetle.

After failing at establishing UP! in the European auto markets, the company is now looking at re-engineering the UP! for the South American market by 2013. As confirmed by the head of Volkswagen brand development, Mr. Ulrich Hackenberg, this re-engineered version of UP! would be targeting the emerging auto markets including India and China. Now, if we put the pieces together, we would understand that the European version of UP! was not suited for the Indian car market and the new low cost version has more chances of making it to India. The company has announced that the final decision regarding the launch of the low cost VW UP! in India would be taken by the end of current year.
